Jamia Millia Islamia was established at Aligarh in the United Provinces. In 1988, JMI became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament. The word Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia Means ‘National’ in the Urdu language.

The growth of the university began during pre-independence India as a central university located in New Delhi, offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialised areas. It is a saga of dedication, conviction, and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it grow slowly. They built up the University of Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice, as said by Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.
